The progressive deterioration in nutrition status frequently seen in cancer patients is often referred to as cancer cachexia. Unlike starvation, in which fat stores from adipose are depleted and protein is spared from skeletal muscle, neither fat nor protein is spared in cachexia. Cachexia affects nearly half of cancer patients, causing the clinical manifestations of anorexia, muscle wasting, weight loss, early satiety, fatigue, and impaired immune response. Hospital Malnutrition Research

Nutritionday, in collaboration with Abbott, looked at the one-day nutritional habits and caloric intake of 10,000 patients admitted to 245 U.S hospitals from 2009-2015. The researchers evaluated the prevalence of malnutrition and linked it to food intake.

“Results of the study indicated that 51% of patients are eating 50% or less of their meals, with reduced intake linked to higher mortality. Adults who did not eat any of their food in the hospital had close to a 6 times higher risk of death compared to those who ate some food. And among those who could eat, but decided to eat nothing, only 11% were given a nutritional supplement. The study also found that close to 50% of patients admitted with ailments related to an infectious disease or those with long term care issues were at risk for malnutrition. Nearly 40% of cancer patients were also found to be at risk of malnutrition, according to study results.”

How Does Protein Help with Wound Healing?

Why Soy Free?

Lactose Intolerance 

People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the sugar (lactose) in milk. As a result, they have diarrhea, gas and bloating after eating or drinking dairy products. The condition, which is also called lactose malabsorption, is usually harmless, but its symptoms can be uncomfortable.

A deficiency of lactase — an enzyme produced in your small intestine — is usually responsible for lactose intolerance. Many people have low levels of lactase but are able to digest milk products without problems. If you're actually lactose intolerant, though, your lactase deficiency leads to symptoms after you eat dairy foods.
